Re: Editorial in Paper dated Friday July 23 2004

“THIS BATTLE HAS TO BE WON.”

26 July 2004

Gentile Signore,

Distinti Saluti

Dear Sir,

I started reading your paper in 1964 and continued to read it in every part of the world that I have lived in until a few days ago. I must say that I have never read an editorial as stupid as the one written in defence of vivisection. This undiluted “gutter press” editorial was grotesque – pure Daily Mail stuff. To compare people’s reactions regarding the Oxford University event to the terrorists of Bin Laden was ludicrous and utterly unworthy of your paper. In addition, I found the crusader tone of your editorial shocking.

Furthermore, you must have a very limited memory because in a Gallup poll (Source: ICM research) published a few years ago by your paper, you stated that over 36% of the British population opposed “the use of animals in scientific testing”. You also stated that a majority of people between the ages of 18 and 24 (44% against 35%) and that a majority of people between the ages of 25 and 34 (47% against 31%) opposed “the use of animals in scientific testing”. In fact, you stated that according to the statistics published by your paper, the majority of young people in the UK were and still are against vivisection.

An editorial of this nature offends a huge section of the population that abhors vivisection.

The international media is continuously informing us that the world will be vegetarian by the year 2050. This confirms that the planet is moving in a certain direction. However, the writer of the editorial apparently has not been informed by your animal rights group that this growing trend seems to be unstoppable. Another poll also in your paper stated that 25% of the British people were considering the vegetarian option.

Your editorialist should take a trip with a friend of mine who goes around the world trying to convince people not to experiment on living beings but to find other methods for research.

My friend described to me a “mengelian” world of atrocities unworthy of an advanced civilisation, a hellish horror that has dramatically changed his life.

According to your distorted logic, docking a dog’s tail should be banned under the proposed animal welfare legislation, while torturing a living creature is something that requires a crusade to ensure its continuation.

Well, I read your paper for 40 years – now it is time to “dock” it from my daily schedule.

Best regards.
